CASE STUDY · Claude training

From the training room to quarter-end: Round13 Capital makes Claude part of how it works

Lightworks trained Round13 Capital, a Toronto-based venture capital investment firm, on Claude, Claude Code, and Cowork using its own quarterly Limited Partner (“LP”) reporting packs as the lab material. The team left with new skills and an AI-enabled financial reporting workflow that returns more than 10 hours each quarter.

Timeline

20 business days, four milestones

The firm

A growing portfolio, and a reporting load to match

Round13 Capital is a Toronto-based venture capital firm backing a portfolio of growth companies. Every quarter, its investment team must keep a current picture of each company’s progress, sales, and opportunities alongside firm-level KPIs, and then turn it all into quarterly packs, board materials, and auditor-ready files.

Like most investment teams, Round13 already had access to AI. What it lacked was a shared way of working: a practical understanding of how to use Claude on the firm’s real workload, not just as an occasional chat tool.

The challenge

Skilled people, spending hours on manual steps

Quarterly and annual reporting was accurate but slow. Analysts gathered source materials by hand, updated valuation workbooks in Excel, and assembled auditor packages piece by piece. It was time the team would rather spend on the portfolio, and while the pack was being built, the analyst team fell behind on shorter-term reporting needed for weekly meetings.

Round13 set out to solve two problems at once:

01

Capability

Give the team structured, hands-on training in Claude, Claude Code, and Cowork, with clear learning outcomes.

02

Operations

Take the manual effort out of quarterly reporting and audit preparation, without rebuilding the firm’s process from scratch.

The training program

A curriculum built on the firm’s own work

Lightworks designed a 20-day Claude training program around Round13’s real reporting, not generic prompts or toy datasets. Participants practiced on the same Progress, Sales, Opportunities, and KPI material they already owned, and on the outline of an actual LP reporting pack. Three learner tracks meant newcomers and power users each started in the right place.

Milestone 01

Discover

Kick-off and intake of a recent quarterly LP reporting pack. Participants practiced on actual portfolio financial information, metrics, and KPIs, and on the outline of an actual LP reporting pack.

Milestone 02

Foundations and investment operations

How the models work, how to brief Claude well, and where each product fits. The team then applied Claude and Cowork to quarterly reporting work using Projects, Skills, Connectors, and Scheduled Tasks, and built a shared Portfolio Reporting Project and a first reusable Skill.

Milestone 03

Build with Claude Code

A spec-driven build of a starter reporting workspace, using both the desktop and terminal paths. A show-and-tell session trained the habit that matters most in finance: reviewing AI-generated output with discernment before it is trusted.

Milestone 04

Prove it and hand it over

A portfolio reporting proof of concept, office hours, and a close-out pack. Slides, lab briefs, Project instructions, Skills, and the Claude Code workspace were handed to named Round13 owners with a 30-day rollout plan.

Throughout the labs, the team practiced on two of the heaviest steps of their quarterly reporting requirements: ingesting financial materials and populating and updating valuation workbooks. These improvements will also contribute to the firm’s annual audit preparations. Sanitized sample data was used where needed, so the work reflected the real shape of Round13’s reporting without exposing sensitive figures.

The results

Hours back every quarter, and a team that keeps building

With the skills and assets from the program, Round13 developed and implemented its own financial reporting platform. It now streamlines the ingestion of financial materials and populates valuation Excel files.

01

Time returned

More than 10 hours saved each quarter on financial reporting and LP report preparation.

02

Visibility

Clearer visibility into investment performance while quarterly and annual reporting is underway.

03

Everyday AI fluency

Across the team, using Projects, Skills, Cowork, and Claude Code on live investment work, not only at quarter-end.

04

Assets the firm owns

A shared Claude Project, reusable Skills, and a Claude Code reporting workspace, each with a named internal owner and a 30-day rollout plan.

“Lightworks was incredibly helpful throughout the process of developing and implementing our financial reporting platform. The team took the time to understand our existing workflows, identify where automation could have the greatest impact, and work closely with us to build a solution that fit our needs. Beyond the platform itself, they also helped us better understand how to leverage AI more effectively across our day-to-day workflows.”

Why it worked

Training that shows up in the quarter

01

Real work, not examples

The curriculum ran on a live reporting pack, so every lesson applied directly to files the analysts already managed.

02

Right level for every learner

Three tracks let each participant build confidence at their own pace.

03

Judgment built in

Reviewing and verifying AI output was practiced as a core skill, essential for a finance team.

04

Built to last

The team kept a working Project, Skills, and Claude Code workspace, not a slide deck that expires when the trainer leaves.

05

Measured where it matters

The payoff appeared in the reporting cycle itself, the place an investment team judges whether training was worth it.
